Revolutionising Travel: KSRTC Introduces UPI Payments For Bus Services

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation's new cashless payment system introduces UPI and card payments via smart ETMs, improving passenger convenience. This initiative, in partnership with EbixCash, aims to modernise bus services and streamline ticketing processes across the fleet.

In a significant step toward modernizing public transportation, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is embracing technology by introducing cashless payment options for its services. This innovative move is set to revolutionize the way passengers use bus services by allowing them to make payments using Unified Payments Interface (UPI), debit, and credit cards. The deployment of over 10,000 smart Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) across KSRTC's vast fleet of 8,800 buses demonstrates a commitment to enhancing commuter convenience and streamlining the ticketing process.

The transition to cashless transactions comes as a response to the feedback from passengers who have long sought an alternative to the traditional cash-based system. This change aims to tackle the challenges of handling cash and the frequent conflicts over change, thereby improving the overall travel experience. With the new system in place, passengers can now enjoy a smoother, more efficient payment process without the hassle of carrying cash.

Collaboration with EbixCash for Digital Transformation

KSRTC's journey towards digitalization involves a strategic partnership with EbixCash Ltd., tasked with implementing an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) over the next five years. This collaboration focuses on integrating cashless ticketing and comprehensive digital payment solutions, marking a pivotal moment in KSRTC's efforts to modernize its operations. The project will see an additional 15,000 devices being rolled out, indicating a move towards a fully automated fare collection system.

Technological Advancements in Ticketing

In explaining the technical underpinnings of the new system, KSRTC Managing Director V. Anbu Kumar highlighted the adoption of 10,245 Android-based smart ETMs. These next-generation devices boast touchscreens, wireless connectivity, and enhanced processing speeds, representing a significant upgrade over the previous models that have been in use for the past two decades. This technological leap is not only about replacing outdated equipment but also about preparing for a future where digital transactions are the norm.

Following a successful initial trial of a dynamic QR payment system, KSRTC is poised to extend this functionality across all smart ETMs by the end of the month. This development places KSRTC at the forefront of digital payment adoption in Karnataka's transport sector, setting a benchmark for others to follow.

KSRTC's initiative to go cashless also involves equipping its buses with sophisticated ETMs capable of accepting multiple forms of payment, including the National Common Mobility Cards and various KSRTC-issued bus passes. This expansion of payment options is expected to be fully operational within a month, further enhancing the flexibility and convenience for passengers.

Enhancing Passenger Convenience

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy lauded the new cashless payment system, recognizing its potential to solve the longstanding issue of change. "This move addresses the recurring issue of passengers not having exact change, providing convenience for both passengers and conductors. Payments can now be made through UPI payment platforms as well as debit and credit cards, ensuring smoother transactions." This shift not only streamlines the payment process but also reflects KSRTC's dedication to improving service delivery and passenger satisfaction.

In conclusion, KSRTC's transition to a cashless payment system signifies a major step forward in improving public transport services in Karnataka. By integrating modern technology into its operations, KSRTC is enhancing the commuting experience for thousands of passengers daily. This initiative, coupled with the collaborative efforts with EbixCash Ltd., is set to transform KSRTC into a more efficient, customer-friendly service provider, ready to meet the demands of the digital age.
