Bharti Airtel has revealed plans to provide 5G connectivity for Kolkata Metro commuters by installing high-capacity nodes under the Hooghly River, reaching depths of 35 meters. This initiative makes Airtel the first to deliver uninterrupted connectivity along Kolkata's East-West Metro corridor, a 4.8-kilometre route connecting Howrah Maidan and the Esplanade. The high-capacity nodes at each station will ensure seamless connectivity, allowing passengers to access high-speed internet, make voice, and transmit data without interruption.

Enhancing Commuters' Experience
Ayan Sarkar, CEO of Bharti Airtel West Bengal and Odisha, highlighted the importance of this project, stating that it will transform the commuting experience. Passengers will be able to enjoy high-definition video streaming, gaming, multiple chatting options, instant photo uploads, and more while travelling beneath the Ganges River.
India's First Underwater Metro
India's first underwater metro is set to begin operations in June 2024. It will link Howrah to Kolkata via a tunnel beneath the Hooghly River. In April 2023, the Kolkata Metro achieved a significant milestone when its rake ran under the river for the first time in India.
The project was approved in 2009 but has faced numerous challenges and cost increases over time. In December 2022, officials reported that the project's cost had nearly doubled in 13 years. Despite these setbacks, the underwater metro is expected to revolutionise transportation in Kolkata and improve connectivity for its residents.
In conclusion, Bharti Airtel's initiative to provide 5G connectivity for Kolkata Metro commuters demonstrates a commitment to enhancing public transportation experiences. As India's first underwater metro prepares for its inaugural operations in 2024, passengers can look forward to enjoying seamless connectivity and an array of digital services during their commute.
