In an effort to preserve the heritage of Kolkata's famous yellow taxis, the West Bengal government, along with a private company, has launched a modern version of these traditional cabs. Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty, along with Transport Secretary Soumitra Mohan and other officials, introduced 20 new hatchback cars as part of this initiative. These new taxis, called 'Yellow Heritage Cabs,' aim to maintain the city's cultural identity while adapting to modern transportation needs.

Decline of Traditional Yellow Taxis
The introduction of these modern cabs comes at a time when the number of traditional yellow taxis is decreasing. Once, there were about 20,000 yellow taxis in Kolkata, but this number has dropped significantly. By the end of 2025, less than 2,000 are expected to remain in service, and by 2027-28, the entire fleet will be retired. This is due to a 2009 Calcutta High Court order that requires commercial vehicles older than 15 years to be phased out in Kolkata and Howrah under the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).
Modern Features with a Touch of Tradition
The new Yellow Heritage Cabs are designed to provide both comfort and safety. These cars come with modern features such as seat belts, airbags, and the ability to run on both CNG and petrol. Despite their modern look, they still carry the charm of the traditional yellow taxis. Each taxi is decorated with images of Kolkata's famous landmarks, including the Victoria Memorial Hall and Howrah Bridge, making them a tribute to the city's history.
To make them more convenient for passengers, these taxis can be booked through the government's 'Yatri Sathi' app. This ensures that both residents and visitors can easily access them whenever needed.
This project is a collaboration between the West Bengal government and a leading automobile company. It is a step forward in improving public transport while keeping Kolkata's historical essence alive. Within two months, around 3,000 Yellow Heritage Cabs will start running on the streets, offering a safer and more comfortable travel experience.
The launch of these modern yellow taxis is a perfect mix of tradition and innovation. While Kolkata's old yellow taxis are slowly disappearing, the new Yellow Heritage Cabs ensure that the city's identity remains unchanged. This move shows how the city is adapting to the future while holding on to its past. The yellow taxi, a symbol of Kolkata, will continue to be a part of the city's landscape, just in a new and improved form.
