Metro Railway has proposed a new metro corridor connecting Kolkata Station, Chitpur, with Karunamoyee in Salt Lake. The announcement comes just before Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visits Kolkata, where he is expected to discuss several railway projects with the state government.

Kolkata Metro
This is the first new metro project proposed by Metro Railway in nearly 15 years. Kolkata's first metro route, the Blue Line, started operations 42 years ago and was later extended in both directions. Most of the city's other metro corridors were planned around 17 years ago, but many are still under construction or awaiting completion. Recently, the Pink Line between Baranagar and Barrackpore was revived after remaining inactive for 16 years. The Green Line, whose construction began in 2008, became fully operational last year when the final 2.4-km section was inaugurated.
Kolkata Metro New Line
Metro Railway has already started a feasibility study and ground survey for the proposed 8.8-km corridor. The line will run from Kolkata Station to Karunamoyee. Along the way, it is expected to pass through areas near Khudiram Bose Road, the Bagjola Canal, and the No. 6 Island Circle in Salt Lake. Officials are still deciding whether the corridor should be completely elevated or partly underground and partly elevated. Detailed planning will be carried out after the feasibility study is completed.
How will it Benefit Commuters?
The main objective of the project is to provide a direct metro connection between Kolkata Station and Salt Lake. This would make travel easier for commuters, reduce dependence on road transport, and improve connectivity between important residential, business, and transport hubs. If approved, the new route could significantly reduce travel time and strengthen Kolkata's expanding metro network, benefiting thousands of passengers every day.
