Kolkata Metro's Blue Line To Charge Rs 10 Surcharge For Night Services From 2025

Starting January 1, 2025, the Kolkata Metro will introduce a Rs 10 surcharge for night services on the Blue Line to combat low passenger numbers. This initiative aims to assess the viability of late-night transport while balancing operational costs.

From the start of 2025, commuters using the Kolkata Metro's special night services on the Blue Line between New Garia and Dum Dum will face an additional cost. A Rs 10 surcharge is being introduced for these late-night journeys, specifically departing at 10:40 p.m. on weekdays, in an attempt to counteract the low passenger numbers these services have been experiencing. This decision, aimed at sustaining the operational viability of running trains beyond standard hours, is set to kick off on January 1, 2025.

A spokesperson for the Metro clarified that this charge would be applicable across the board for all passengers, irrespective of the journey length on the Kavi Subhash-Dum Dum route. "The Rs 10 surcharge is necessary to offset low ridership during these services. It will apply uniformly, regardless of the distance traveled," they stated. This move, initially announced on December 3 but delayed due to backlash from the public on social media platforms, is now scheduled for implementation.

This initiative by the Kolkata Metro to introduce a surcharge on night-time services has ignited discussions among city dwellers, especially those who rely on the Metro for late-night commutes. The additional cost comes at a time when transportation expenses are on the rise, causing some to question the fairness of this new fee. Yet, it represents an effort to balance the financial health of the Metro services with the convenience offered to night-time travelers.

The trial surcharge is not just about extra costs. It presents an opportunity to gather valuable insights on the demand and feasibility of running trains after regular service hours. The data collected from this initiative will play a crucial role in determining whether the Metro can sustain these special night services in the long run, taking into account both the needs of the commuters and the financial implications for the Metro operations.

The introduction of a Rs 10 surcharge for special night services on the Kolkata Metro's Blue Line is a significant step. Starting January 1, 2025, it will test the waters for the viability of late-night public transport solutions in the city. While met with some skepticism due to the added cost for commuters, the trial phase is crucial for assessing how best to serve the city's late-night transportation needs without compromising on the Metro's operational stability.
