Passengers traveling on the Kolkata Metro's East-West corridor will face a temporary halt in services from February 20 to February 23. The Kolkata Metro has announced this suspension to carry out important testing of the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. This testing will take place across the entire route, from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, and is necessary to improve safety and operational efficiency.

Testing for a Safer and Better Metro
This is not the first time the Kolkata Metro has stopped services for CBTC testing. Earlier, train operations were also suspended from February 13 for similar reasons. A metro official confirmed, "There will be another complete traffic block from February 20 to 23 for testing the CBTC System on the East-West Metro Corridor. No services will be available during this time on the East-West corridor."
The CBTC system is an advanced signaling technology that allows trains to run safely and efficiently. The metro authorities are taking this step to ensure the system functions smoothly before full operations begin.
Other Metro Lines Will Continue to Run
While the East-West corridor will be closed for testing, passengers can still use other metro routes. The Blue, Purple, and Orange lines will continue to operate as per their usual schedule. The term "traffic block" in railway operations means a complete halt in train movement, which is why no services will be available during the testing period.
Delays in Opening the Esplanade-Sealdah Stretch
The Kolkata Metro has faced multiple delays in opening the important 2.5-kilometer section between Esplanade and Sealdah. One major reason for this delay was the tunnel collapse at Bowbazar in September 2019, caused by a boring machine hitting an underground water source. Since then, several other challenges have slowed down the completion of this stretch.
At present, the East-West corridor is divided into two separate sections:
- Sector V to Sealdah
- Esplanade to Howrah Maidan
The metro authorities are working hard to connect these two sections so that passengers can travel smoothly across the full route.
The Kolkata Metro's decision to suspend services for CBTC testing is an important step toward providing safer and more efficient travel for commuters. While the temporary closure may cause inconvenience, it is necessary to ensure long-term reliability. Once the testing is complete, passengers can expect better and more seamless metro operations in the future.
