Kolkata's metro rail, a vital part of the city's public transportation system, will experience a temporary halt in services along its East-West corridor. This pause is set to facilitate crucial testing of the Communication-based Train Control (CBTC) system. An official shared this update, emphasizing the significance of these tests for enhancing the efficiency and safety of metro operations across the corridor stretching from Howrah Maidan to Sector 5.
This interruption in services is scheduled to occur in two distinct phases during the month, specifically from February 13 to 16 and subsequently from February 20 to 23. The purpose behind these planned service halts, referred to as a "traffic block" in metro parlance, is to conduct comprehensive tests on the CBTC system that spans the entire Green Line corridor.
Challenges Leading to Service Interruptions
Past disruptions in metro services have often been attributed to unforeseen challenges, such as the cave-in incident during tunnel construction at Bowbazar in September 2019. This mishap resulted in significant water leakage issues, delaying the inauguration of the 2.5-km segment between Esplanade and Sealdah stations. Currently, the metro operates in two disconnected segments: one covering a 9.4-km stretch from Sector 5 to Sealdah, and another spanning 4.8 km from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan.
The spokesperson for Kolkata Metro Railway conveyed optimism regarding the upcoming CBTC system tests, following the successful completion of tunnel work between Esplanade and Sealdah stations. The goal is to commence full operations along the corridor later this year, leveraging the advanced CBTC technology-a hallmark of modern metro networks worldwide. Presently, metro services are available between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade, as well as between Sealdah and Sector 5, facilitating daily commutes for thousands of passengers.
The temporary suspension of Kolkata Metro services along the East-West corridor is a crucial step towards implementing the advanced CBTC system. Despite the inconvenience caused by the service halt, the authorities are focused on ensuring a safer and more efficient metro network.
