In an important step to upgrade Kolkata's Metro services, the Green Line will see a temporary pause for three days starting April 26. This break in service, from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, will help Metro authorities test a new advanced signalling system and inspect a new section of the line.

CBTC system testing and route inspection
The Metro services will be completely stopped on the Green Line from April 26 (Saturday) to April 28 (Monday). This is to carry out full testing of the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system on the 16.6 km stretch and inspect the Esplanade-Sealdah section. The CBTC system is designed to make the train service safer, faster, and more regular for daily commuters.
Officials said the testing is an important step in improving the quality of the Metro service and preparing the Esplanade-Sealdah section for opening in the near future. This section is important for completing the route from Howrah Maidan to Sector V.
Temporary closure of subway at Sealdah
During this three-day break, the subway that connects Sealdah Metro station with the Eastern Railway's Sealdah station will also remain closed. Passengers are advised to plan their travel accordingly and look for other options.
Green Line services on two stretches to continue
Even though the full Green Line service will be stopped, Metro trains will continue to run on two separate parts: Howrah Maidan to Esplanade (Green Line-1) and Sealdah to Sector V (Green Line-2). These are the two sections that have been working separately after tunnelling work near Bowbazar in 2018 caused a ground cave-in, delaying the opening of the Esplanade-Sealdah stretch.
Special Metro service after the IPL match cancelled
As part of the service pause, the Metro's special train service on Green Line-2, which was planned for after the Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL match at Eden Gardens on April 26, will also not be available. However, fans attending the match will still be able to use the special Metro service on the Blue Line (Dakshineswar-New Garia) after the game.
This short break in Metro service shows Kolkata Metro's effort to improve travel for all. Once the CBTC system is fully working, passengers can expect a safer and more timely ride. The Metro team is working hard to make sure the city gets a modern and reliable transit system.
