Kochi Metro's International Recognition

Kochi Water Metro has recently earned international recognition by securing a place among the top three winners at the 2026 Global Sustainable Transport Awards. Although it did not win first place, finishing in the top three is a major achievement. The project competed with transport initiatives from major cities and countries around the world.

First Prize Received by Brazil

The first prize went to Salvador in Brazil for its large electric bus rapid transit system, modern infrastructure, and inclusive employment policies. Chile's capital, Santiago, also received special mention for having the largest electric bus fleet in Latin America. Kochi Water Metro received a special commendation from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), a New York-based organisation that selected the jury for the awards.

Use of Kochi Water Metro Routes

What truly set Kochi apart was its creative use of water routes as a regular mode of public transport. Unlike traditional metro systems that run on roads or tracks, Kochi Water Metro connects 10 islands using waterway services. This has reduced travel time from nearly an hour by road to just about 20 minutes by boat, at almost half the cost.

The system currently operates 20 electric-hybrid boats and has already served more than 60 lakh passengers. It also helps cut pollution, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 184 grams per passenger per kilometre. Lokanath Behra, Managing Director of Kochi Metro and Kochi Water Metro, said the recognition is encouraging and has motivated the team to aim higher. He added that moving towards hydrogen-powered boats, despite higher costs, is the next important step to stay ahead globally.
