Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is embarking on an ambitious project to revamp Terminal 1, aiming to significantly boost its passenger handling capacity. The initiative, governed by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), plans to elevate the terminal's annual capacity to 20 million passengers, a 42% increase from its current throughput. This enhancement is in response to the growing demand for air travel, necessitating expanded facilities to accommodate the surge in passenger traffic.

The extensive renovation of Terminal 1 is scheduled to initiate in November 2025, with a comprehensive plan to deconstruct and reconstruct the terminal infrastructure in stages. MIAL has pledged to carry out the transformation efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption to airport operations. During the renovation, the burden of additional passenger traffic will be borne by Terminal 2 and the newly inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport, ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers.
Strategic Expansion and Modernisation
The redevelopment project, set to conclude by 2029, encompasses a two-phase strategy. The initial phase focuses on dismantling the current structure of Terminal 1 and laying the groundwork for a new, state-of-the-art facility. The subsequent phase will introduce a new terminal and modernise the existing infrastructure, aiming for completion within three years. This ambitious project underscores the airport's commitment to enhancing its capacity and services in response to the escalating demand for domestic air travel.
Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), CSMIA's renovation also includes plans to merge domestic and international operations in the future, as reported by India Today. This strategic move is expected to streamline operations and provide a more cohesive travel experience. Among the anticipated improvements are advanced landscaping techniques to ensure cooling, the establishment of multipurpose substations, and an upgraded baggage handling system, all of which are geared towards creating a more efficient and passenger-friendly airport.
This comprehensive overhaul of Terminal 1 not only aims to increase passenger capacity but also to enrich the overall quality of services and infrastructure at Mumbai's key international gateway. With these enhancements, CSMIA is poised to meet the growing needs of domestic flyers and maintain its status as a crucial hub for air travel in the region.
