The Kochi Water Metro, launched in 2023, became India's first water-based public transport system linked to a metro rail network. Now, the Maharashtra government has asked Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for Mumbai's upcoming water metro project, aiming to meet the commuters' demands.

Mumbai's Water Metro Design
According to KMRL, the DPR will be prepared based on an earlier feasibility study carried out by its consultancy division, which examined possible water metro routes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including important water bodies, such as Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja, offering improved travel options for commuters in India's financial hub. The Managing Director of KMRL, Lokanath Behera, stated that preparing a DPR for Mumbai will be a complex job since the city's waterways include canals, backwaters, port waters, and sea routes. However, the knowledge gained from running Kochi's successful Water Metro will help in designing a modern and sustainable transport system for Mumbai. He added that the water metro will not only provide faster travel but will also link smoothly with rail and road networks, making public transport more convenient.
Mumbai's Water Metro Network
As per plans, the Mumbai Water Metro will cover nearly 250 km of waterways, including 29 terminals and 10 different routes, creating an extensive network for daily passengers. Behera mentioned that the DPR is expected to be ready by the end of this year. Apart from improving connectivity, this project will also give a big boost to KMRL's consultancy services and generate additional revenue for the company beyond ticket sales. The Mumbai Water Metro is being seen as a major step towards eco-friendly, multi-modal urban transport in one of the busiest cities in the country.
