Kochi Metro Expansion to Karakutty: Connecting Metro to Cochin International Airport

There are plans to connect the Metro Rail to Cochin International Airport, which are moving forward, but local citizen groups are now demanding that the proposed line be extended further to Karukutty in Angamaly.

Preparation of Detailed Project Report

As per current plans, a detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared to study the feasibility of a metro line starting from Aluva, passing along NH 544, and connecting key points, including the airport, the upcoming airport railway station, and reaching Karayamparamb in Angamaly. Surveys for this project were already conducted earlier this month.

How will this metro project benefit Commuters?

However, members of the Karukutty Metro Action Council believe that extending the line to Karukutty would bring benefits. According to council president Lalu George Pynadath, such an extension would help travellers from nearby areas, including Chalakkudy in Thrissur district. Karukutty is just about 3 km from Karayamparamb and has strong growth potential due to the presence of educational institutions and a major multi-speciality hospital. Improved metro connectivity could also benefit areas on the outskirts of the Ernakulam district.

Challenge to be Faced

Another concern raised is traffic congestion at Karayamparamb, which is already facing heavy traffic and is expected to get busier with upcoming road projects where three bypasses will connect. Therefore, making it the final metro station could worsen the congestion.

Demand for Metro Extension

The action council has presented its demand to Loknath Behera, head of Kochi Metro Rail Limited. They are also planning to approach Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Nitin Gadkari for approval. Officials have a positive response, and earlier studies suggest enough passenger demand to support extending the metro line further towards Angamaly.
