Several local stakeholders and residents have called for the proposed Kochi Metro airport extension to be planned to provide better connectivity to Angamaly. The demand has gained attention as the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Metro's Phase III extension from Aluva to Angamaly is nearing completion.
Kochi Metro Airport Corridor
The proposed Metro corridor is expected to connect Aluva with Cochin International Airport and then continue towards Angamaly. Airport connectivity has emerged as an important part of the project. However, local groups want the route to also serve important locations in Angamaly, especially the railway station and the municipal bus stand.
Stakeholders believe that bringing the Metro closer to the Angamaly railway station would make the project more useful for daily commuters. It could also help create a major transport hub where Metro services, trains, buses, and highways connect. Such integration could encourage more people to use public transport and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
The proposed corridor is being studied through several alignment options. One preferred plan involves an elevated Metro line from Aluva along NH 544, followed by an underground section connecting directly to the airport. After the airport, the line would become elevated again before reaching Angamaly. The proposal includes around 15 stations at important locations along the route.
However, connecting the Metro directly to Angamaly railway station may require changes to the proposed alignment. Officials have pointed out that such a change could increase land acquisition requirements and project costs, particularly around the airport.
Local representatives and residents are therefore asking authorities to consider public needs before finalising the alignment. They believe that a well-planned Metro extension could reduce traffic pressure on NH 544, improve airport access and strengthen public transport connectivity in the Angamaly region.
