Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has started work on a comprehensive 25-year master plan to guide the future expansion and development of Kochi airport, aiming to focus on increasing airport capacity and improving passenger, cargo, and transport infrastructure in line with the expected growth of the aviation sector.
Kochi Airport's 25-year Master Plan
Jacobs Solutions India Pvt Ltd has been appointed to prepare the master plan. The consultancy study will take 10 months and will assess the airport's requirements over the next 25 years. It will examine the need for a second runway, including its alignment, length, orientation and distance from the existing runway. The study will also look at taxiways, runway crossings, drainage systems, additional aircraft parking aprons and possible locations for future terminals.
As part of the plan, CIAL will prepare long-term forecasts for passenger traffic, aircraft movements and cargo demand. The assessment will consider historical aviation trends, passenger markets, airlines, destinations, aircraft types, load factors, cargo activity and the airport's catchment area.
The master plan will also examine the development of a next-generation cargo village to improve cargo handling, storage and supply-chain operations. Sustainability, digitalisation, security and efficiency will be key areas of focus.
Future connectivity will be another major part of the study. It will assess road networks, railway augmentation and new railway stations, phased Metro connectivity and possible inland-waterway links to the airport.
The plan will also study the future requirement for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities and a heliport with terminal facilities, hangars and connectivity.
The master plan is being prepared for Rs 7.84 crore, with the consultancy scheduled to be completed within 10 months. The exercise is intended to provide a long-term development framework for Kochi airport and its supporting infrastructure.
