Kerala Weather Today, May 31: Kerala is set to witness widespread rainfall on Sunday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued wet weather across several districts. A yellow alert has been issued in six districts, while authorities have also warned of thunderstorms, gusty winds and rough sea conditions along the coast.

The weather department has indicated that the southwest monsoon is likely to strengthen further over the coming days, with rain activity expected to remain intense across central and northern Kerala.
Yellow Alert Issued In Six Districts
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts on May 31, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall.
According to the forecast, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely in several parts of the state. Wind speeds may reach 30-40 kmph in isolated locations, especially during thunderstorm activity.
Heavy Rain Likely In Central And Northern Kerala
Weather officials have warned that central and northern districts could receive moderate to heavy rainfall during the day. Districts including Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod may witness stronger rain spells, while light to moderate showers are expected in parts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam.
The active weather pattern is being driven by strengthening monsoon conditions over the Arabian Sea and the Kerala coast.
More Rain Alerts Ahead
The IMD has also extended rain warnings for the coming days:
- June 1: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad
- June 2: Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod
- June 3: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, particularly in regions prone to waterlogging and localized flooding.
Fishing Ban Continues Along Kerala-Lakshadweep Coast
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as rough weather conditions continue over the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast.
The ban on fishing remains in force until June 3, with authorities warning of strong winds and turbulent sea conditions. Wind speeds along the coast are expected to range between 35 and 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, while some offshore regions could experience even stronger winds.
There are currently no restrictions on fishing activities along the Karnataka coast.
Rough Sea Conditions Across Arabian Sea Region
The IMD has issued a special advisory for mariners and coastal communities, warning of strong winds across several parts of the Arabian Sea over the next few days.
Wind speeds of 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are likely over parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat coast, Oman coast and adjoining waters. Similar conditions are expected over sections of the southeast Arabian Sea, Maldives region and Gulf of Mannar.
Monsoon Set To Intensify
The weather department has indicated that monsoon conditions are becoming increasingly favourable, with widespread rainfall activity expected to continue across Kerala over the next several days.
With heavy rain alerts in place, rough sea conditions persisting and thunderstorms forecast across multiple districts, residents are advised to follow official weather updates and exercise caution while travelling, especially in low-lying and coastal areas.
As Kerala moves deeper into the monsoon season, the state is expected to witness sustained rainfall activity, bringing both relief from summer heat and the possibility of weather-related disruptions.
