Kerala is witnessing increasing rainfall activity as conditions continue to remain favourable for the early arrival of the Southwest Monsoon. Weather agencies have indicated that the next few days will be crucial for the state's monsoon progression, while several districts remain under yellow alert amid forecasts of heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the monsoon has advanced further over parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the Comorin region, and sections of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Meteorologists suggest that the system is steadily evolving, raising expectations of an earlier-than-usual monsoon onset over Kerala.
Heavy Rain Activity Likely Till May 29
Kerala is expected to receive widespread rainfall and thundershowers over the coming days. Isolated places may also experience strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts touching 60 kmph in some areas.
Authorities have warned that rainfall intensity may fluctuate despite an overall below-normal seasonal outlook. While overall seasonal rain projections may remain lower, isolated heavy rain events are still possible.
Yellow Alert Districts
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for several districts over the coming days:
May 25: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad
May 26: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha
May 27: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam
A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours in isolated locations.
Fishermen Advised Not To Venture Into Sea
The weather department has also cautioned fishermen regarding rough sea conditions over parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep region and adjoining coastal areas.
Strong winds between 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, are likely over several marine zones during the next few days. Fishing activities have been restricted in the affected regions for safety reasons.
Public Advisory
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as heavy rainfall may lead to:
- Waterlogging in low-lying areas
- Reduced visibility and traffic disruptions
- Damage to power lines and trees due to strong winds
- Possible landslides in vulnerable regions
- Lightning-related risks during thunderstorms
People have been advised to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms and follow local weather advisories.
Temperature Update Across Kerala
Recent weather observations showed a decline in maximum temperatures in districts including Ernakulam, Kottayam, Kozhikode and Kollam. Elsewhere, temperatures largely remained near normal levels across the state.
With weather systems strengthening over surrounding seas, the coming three to four days are expected to be important for Kerala's monsoon progression and rainfall pattern.
