Kerala is witnessing intense pre-monsoon activity with widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and coastal alerts across several districts as the southwest monsoon inches closer to the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the monsoon is now likely to reach Kerala between May 28 and June 3, slightly later than the earlier expected arrival date of May 26.

Several parts of the state have already begun receiving heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. According to weather updates, districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam remain under yellow alert due to the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall over the next few days.
As per current weather conditions, temperatures across Kerala are hovering around 31 degrees Celsius during the daytime, while humidity levels remain high at nearly 75 percent. Weather data also shows increasing chances of rain and thunderstorms from afternoon hours onwards, with cloud cover expected to continue through the evening.
Sea Erosion Warning Along Kerala Coast
The National Centre for Oceanographic Studies and Research (INCOIS) has issued a warning regarding possible sea erosion and high waves along various coastal stretches of Kerala. Officials stated that waves ranging between 0.9 metres and 1.4 metres are likely to affect coastal regions till late night on May 27.
The alert covers several coastal areas across Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Kannur-Kasaragod districts. Authorities have advised fishermen, coastal residents, and tourists to remain cautious during this period.
Residents living in vulnerable coastal zones have been asked to avoid venturing close to the sea due to rough wave activity linked to the black sea phenomenon. Small boats and recreational water activities are also being discouraged temporarily as a precautionary measure.
Rainfall and Thunderstorm Activity to Continue
Weather forecasts suggest that Kerala may continue to experience scattered thunderstorms and intermittent rainfall over the coming days. Hourly forecasts indicate increasing rain probability during afternoon and evening hours, especially in central and southern districts.
Despite the delay in the official monsoon onset announcement, meteorologists note that Kerala is already experiencing weather conditions typically associated with the beginning of the monsoon season. Cloud build-up over the Arabian Sea and moisture-laden winds continue to strengthen rainfall activity across the state.
Meanwhile, weather experts have clarified that a slight delay in monsoon onset does not necessarily indicate weak seasonal rainfall. The IMD has earlier noted that large-scale climate patterns such as El Nino may influence the overall rainfall distribution during the 2026 monsoon season.
Pleasant Temperatures But Humid Conditions Persist
Compared to several northern and central Indian states currently facing severe heatwave conditions, Kerala continues to remain relatively cooler due to persistent cloud cover and rainfall activity. However, humidity levels remain high, making conditions uncomfortable during non-rainy hours.
The coming days are expected to remain cloudy with frequent rain spells, thunderstorms, and occasional gusty winds as Kerala prepares for the formal arrival of the southwest monsoon.
