Kerala Weather Today: IMD Issues Yellow Alert In 6 Districts; Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Likely Till June 3

Kerala continues to witness active monsoon conditions, with widespread rainfall and thunderstorms expected across several parts of the state over the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds as the southwest monsoon strengthens over the region.

According to the latest forecast, many districts are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, while isolated places could experience intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled till June 3.

Current Weather Conditions

Several parts of Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, witnessed cloudy skies, thunderstorms and intermittent rainfall on Friday morning. Temperatures remained around 29°C, while humidity levels stayed high due to ongoing monsoon activity.

The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated locations across the state.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert In 6 Districts

The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for the following districts:

  • Thiruvananthapuram
  • Kollam
  • Pathanamthitta
  • Alappuzha
  • Kottayam
  • Ernakulam

A Yellow Alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours and advises residents to remain cautious.

Rainfall Forecast Till June 3

The weather department has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across Kerala over the next several days. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in various districts as monsoon conditions continue to strengthen.

Meteorologists have stated that favourable conditions exist for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon over additional parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep region and adjoining areas.

Flash Flood Risk Warning

Authorities have also highlighted the possibility of localized waterlogging and flash flooding in low-lying areas, particularly during periods of intense rainfall. Residents living near rivers, streams and vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert and follow updates issued by local authorities.

Advisory For Residents

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
  • Stay away from flooded roads, rivers and waterlogged areas.
  • Secure loose outdoor objects that may be affected by strong winds.
  • Follow official weather updates and district administration advisories.
  • Take precautions against lightning during thunderstorms.

With the monsoon gaining momentum across Kerala, residents are advised to remain vigilant as rain and thunderstorm activity is expected to continue over the coming days.
