Kerala Weather: Orange Alert As Monsoon Nears; Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms & Flash Flood Risk Till June 6

Kerala is preparing for an intense spell of rain as the southwest monsoon edges closer to the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days. Several districts are under orange and yellow alerts, while residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay cautious amid risks of waterlogging, flash floods, traffic disruption and localised power outages.

Weather conditions across parts of Kerala already showed rain activity on Wednesday morning, with humid conditions, thunderstorms and intermittent showers reported in several areas. Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours and monitor local advisories.

Monsoon Likely To Reach Kerala Around June 4

According to IMD's revised forecast, the southwest monsoon is now expected to set in over Kerala around June 4, arriving later than the usual June 1 onset window. Meteorologists indicated that favourable conditions continue to develop over the Arabian Sea and adjoining regions, which could support monsoon advancement over the next few days.

The department has also forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala during the next six to seven days.

Rainfall intensity in orange-alert regions may become significant enough to affect daily routines.
