Kerala Weather Alert: Southwest Monsoon Strengthens; Heavy To Very Heavy Rainfall Across State Till June 11

Kerala is set for an intense spell of monsoon activity as the southwest monsoon strengthens across the state, bringing the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days. Weather conditions remain active across southern districts, with parts of the state already witnessing cloudy skies, high humidity and intermittent rain.

Google Weather indicators for Thiruvananthapuram showed 29°C conditions with a flash flood risk alert, while rain and thunderstorm activity was indicated later in the evening and overnight.

Monsoon Has Officially Entered Kerala; Three Days Behind Schedule

The southwest monsoon officially reached Kerala on June 4, marking the beginning of India's annual rainy season. Although the onset arrived three days later than the normal June 1 date, meteorological experts noted that the delay remains within the standard seasonal variation.

The arrival ends weeks of pre-monsoon build-up and opens the door for widespread rainfall activity across the southern peninsula.

Why Kerala Is Receiving Intense Rainfall

According to weather updates, multiple atmospheric conditions have aligned to intensify rainfall over Kerala:

  • Increased convective cloud formation over the southeast Arabian Sea
  • Strong moisture-laden westerly winds moving toward the Indian coast
  • Continuous inflow of warm, humid air supporting thunderstorm development
  • Monsoon circulation strengthening over adjoining sea regions

These weather systems are creating favourable conditions for prolonged rainfall episodes and localised intense downpours.

Heavy Rainfall Likely Till June 11

Forecast updates indicate:

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) likely across parts of Kerala
  • Rain activity expected to continue over the state through the coming week
  • Thunderstorms and lightning possible in isolated areas
  • Increased risk of waterlogging and flash flooding, especially in low-lying locations

Weather patterns also suggest rainfall expansion into neighbouring Karnataka and adjoining southern regions.

Areas Under Watch

Residents in districts vulnerable to flooding and water accumulation are advised to remain cautious, especially during late evening and night hours when thunderstorm activity may intensify.

People are advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during intense rain spells
  • Stay away from flooded roads and waterlogged areas
  • Keep mobile devices charged and emergency supplies ready
  • Follow local weather and district administration advisories

Monsoon Progress: What Happens Next?

Meteorological projections suggest the monsoon system will continue advancing inland over the next few days. Conditions remain favourable for further movement across:

  • Remaining parts of southern India
  • Additional Arabian Sea regions
  • Interior peninsular zones

For Kerala, that means the opening phase of monsoon 2026 may continue delivering widespread rainfall before gradually stabilising later in the month.

With high humidity, flood alerts and increasing thunderstorm chances, residents should prepare for a wet and active week ahead.
