Although heavy rain reduced across most parts of Kerala during the day on Sunday, rainfall became heavy again in many areas by night, and authorities urged residents to stay alert and follow safety instructions. The number of deaths caused by rain-related incidents has continued to rise. So far, 11 people have lost their lives, while six others are still missing. Heavy rain, flooding and landslides have caused widespread damage across the state.
Kerala's Heavy Rainfall Led to Deaths
Except for Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram, all districts remained under an Orange Alert on Sunday night. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also warned of a possible flash flood in Pathanamthitta district as the Pampa River was expected to overflow following heavy rain. People living along the banks of the Pampa River and the Kakkad tributary were advised to remain cautious.
As of Sunday evening, 273 relief camps were functioning across Kerala, providing shelter to 7,674 people. Heavy rain and landslides destroyed 30 houses, while 293 houses suffered partial damage. In areas where floodwaters have receded, residents have begun cleaning their homes and shops, but thick layers of mud and silt have made the work difficult.
On Sunday, rescue teams recovered the bodies of two fishermen who had gone missing after separate boat accidents in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. The search is continuing for another missing fisherman. In a separate incident, a 40-year-old woman from Coimbatore died after falling into Palakkuzhi Waterfalls in Palakkad while visiting the area with a group.
Kerala Rainfall Alert Till 8 August
The IMD has warned that some places may receive over 20 cm of rainfall, with the rain alert remaining in force until August 8. Rainfall may reduce slightly on Tuesday and Wednesday before becoming heavy again from Thursday. The weather department has also warned of waterlogging, flash floods and landslides, advising people in vulnerable areas to move to safer places and stay away from riverbanks during heavy rain.

Due to the severe weather, educational institutions, including professional colleges, will remain closed on Monday in 11 districts: Pathanamthitta, Kannur, Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Kottayam, Malappuram, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Wayanad and Palakkad. In Alappuzha, schools and colleges in Kuttanad and Chengannur taluks, as well as institutions functioning as relief camps, will also remain closed.
