Kerala Government has Launched Priyadarshini, A Free Travel Scheme for Women & Transgender

The Kerala government has launched the 'Priyadarshini' free travel scheme for women and transgender persons on KSRTC ordinary buses across the state. The scheme was officially inaugurated on June 15, 2026, by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan at the Thampanoor Central Bus Station in Thiruvananthapuram. The first journey under the scheme was operated entirely by a women-led bus crew and carried the Chief Minister and other dignitaries to the Secretariat.

Why is the Initiative Taken?

The initiative is being seen as a major step towards women's empowerment and social inclusion. Around 3,125 ordinary buses operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) have been included in the scheme, although some are currently not in service. Women and transgender passengers can now travel free on seven categories of ordinary bus services, including ordinary, city ordinary, limited-stop ordinary, fair-stage ordinary, town-to-town, point-to-point, and Gramavandi services. Special stickers have been placed on eligible buses to help passengers easily identify them.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Minister described the scheme as a proud achievement for Kerala. He said that it is not a charity program but a carefully planned initiative that will bring long-term social and economic benefits. According to him, women can now travel with a greater sense of freedom and ownership.

Kerala Government's Assurance KSRTC & Private Bus Operators

The government has assured that KSRTC will not suffer financially because of the scheme. Any losses incurred will be compensated through special financial support from the state government. The Chief Minister also reassured private bus operators that their concerns would be addressed if the scheme affected their business.

How will this Scheme Benefit Women?

Initially, the free travel benefit will be available for 100 days. After reviewing its performance, the government may extend it to fast and superfast bus services as well. Officials believe the scheme could reduce women's travel expenses by 15% to 25%, leaving them with more disposable income and encouraging economic activity.

Women in southern Kerala, especially in Thiruvananthapuram and nearby districts, are expected to benefit the most because a large number of ordinary KSRTC buses operate in the region.
