Indian Railways has approved a package of infrastructure projects worth about ₹871 crore to upgrade rail capacity and train services faster and more efficiently across several states. These projects are part of a broader plan to modernise rail facilities and support more trains for both passengers and freight.

New & Improved Coach Maintenance
In Rajasthan, new and improved coach maintenance facilities will be built to support modern trains like Vande Bharat and LHB-type rakes. At Shri Ganganagar, the Phase-I maintenance depot will have long washing and stabling lines, pit lines, a wheel-lathe track, engine escape line, sick line shed, and modern equipment to handle routine train servicing. This is expected to increase daily maintenance capacity and help run more trains reliably. A second phase at Lalgarh will also expand its coaching depot to meet rising maintenance needs in the Bikaner region.
Doubling Railway Project in Kerala
In Kerala, a big part of the investment, around ₹450 crore, will go toward doubling the track on a busy 21.10-km section between Turavur and Mararikulam on the Ernakulam-Alappuzha-Kayankulam corridor. This doubling project will allow more train movements in both directions, reduce delays for passenger and freight trains, and improve links to Cochin Port. Once completed, the doubled track is expected to support additional daily passengers and nearly 2.9 million tonnes of freight.
Important Railway Project in West Bengal
In West Bengal, a smaller but important project will build a 4.75-km bypass line at Kalipahari to reduce congestion near Asansol Yard. This bypass will help trains avoid reversing engines at the yard, cutting delays for both passenger and freight services.
Moreover, these investments are designed to make India's rail network more capable, reduce congestion, support future trains, including Vande Bharat services, and improve efficiency for both passengers and goods movement.
