Kashmir has its first ever electric train operational and Kashmir replaced the diesel-powered train on the 137-kilometer Banihal-Baramulla corridor with an environmentally friendly electric train. Recently, a test run of the electric train between Banihal in the Jammu division and Baramulla in the Kashmir valley was undertaken.

The testing for the Budgam-Baramulla rail link had already been conducted this year, while the trials for the Budgam-Banihal stretch were conducted on September 24, 25, and 26. This electric train includes two sections. Additionally, we had the Northern Railways' primary chief electrical engineer conduct a security and safety examination. After three days of work, we are ready to operate the first electric trains, which will also be economical because they will reduce operating expenses by more than 60%, said Abid Amin Shah, Additional General Manager, IRCON.

The longest railway tunnel in India to be electrified is the Qazigund-Banihal railway tunnel (T-80). This tunnel, which is 11.215 kilometers long, is situated in the Himalayan Pir Panjal range in the town of Qazigund.

Seven trains run frequently in the Baramulla-Banihal sector in J&K, where there are currently 19 trains in operation. Every day, the trains carry about 30,000 passengers, including commuters to work and school. 2013 saw the launch of Kashmir's first rail service, which was presided over by Manmohan Singh, the previous prime minister. To connect Kashmir with the rest of the nation, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway (USBRL) railway track is being constructed.
