The introduction of electric buses in Ladakh marks a significant milestone in the region's journey toward a carbon-neutral future. The region's dedication to sustainable development is demonstrated by this action, which also serves as an example for other tourist sites throughout the world.

Ladakh, a scenic region in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, is renowned for its pristine beauty and breathtaking scenery. However, the administration of Ladakh has made a huge step towards a cleaner future by integrating electric buses into its transport system in response to the rise in tourists and related carbon emissions.
As part of their initiatives to make Leh and Kargil into smart cities and turn Ladakh into a carbon-neutral Union Territory, the authorities in Kargil have launched the first batch of four electric buses. These buses are 100% zero-emission vehicles and are offered by SIDCO Transport, Ladakh.
The 4 electric bus details:
- One of the electric buses will travel around Kargil town anticlockwise, stopping at the new district hospital to serve the transport needs of the neighbourhood
- Three journeys per day will be made by another bus from Kargil to Sankoo
- The third bus will travel from Kargil to Drass and return
- The fourth bus will travel daily from Kargil to Leh

It is to note that compared to diesel buses, electric buses are quieter and create less noise pollution. This is crucial in a region like Ladakh where tourists are drawn in large part by the area's calm and tranquility.
The e-buses were flagged off by Khan and Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, a member of parliament from Ladakh, in front of senior officials including Ajeet Kumar Sahu and Santosh Sukhadeve.
The buses, according to Khan, would make local public travel easier and are environmentally beneficial. Since there are charging stations scattered throughout, he claimed that this facility can accommodate the needs of the general public.
Feroz Ahmad Khan, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, stressed the goal of these electric cars during the opening ceremony, emphasizing how they would promote carbon neutrality in Ladakh and improve transit options for local commuters.

They took an e-bus during their stay from TFC to the Council Secretariat, Zamisthiang, and Baroo before returning to TFC. It is to note that right now there are no scheduled timings for the same and the concerned departments are instructed to set certain timings for all the buses for a better transport system with punctuality.
