The Minister of Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently shared exciting updates in the Lok Sabha about the development of railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This ambitious project aims to enhance railway stations across India with a long-term approach to provide better facilities and improve passenger experience. The focus is on making stations more modern, accessible, and environmentally friendly.

Key Features of the Scheme
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme emphasizes continuous development. It includes a master plan for each station, implemented in phases. The key enhancements planned are:
- Improved station access and circulating areas.
- Renovated waiting halls and upgraded toilets.
- Installation of lifts, escalators, and improved platform surfaces.
- Cleanliness initiatives and free Wi-Fi access.
- Setting up kiosks for local products under the 'One Station One Product' initiative.
- Advanced passenger information systems.
- Executive lounges and spaces for business meetings.
- Landscaping for aesthetic appeal.
- For long-term impact, the scheme envisions sustainable solutions, amenities for Divyangjans (persons with disabilities), and integration of the station with both sides of the city. Other features include ballastless tracks, multimodal transportation facilities, and the creation of city centers at the stations.
Financial Allocation for Uttar Pradesh
The state of Uttar Pradesh, which is covered by five railway zones, has been allocated ₹5,930 crores for the financial year 2024-25. This allocation will be used for the development and maintenance of stations under Plan Head-53, 'Customer Amenities.'
Development in Uttar Pradesh and Kanpur
Under the scheme, 157 railway stations in Uttar Pradesh have been identified for development. A significant focus is on Kanpur, where the following stations are set for redevelopment:
1. Kanpur Anwarganj
2. Kanpur Bridge Left Bank
3. Kanpur Central
4. Govindpuri
5. Ghatampur
6. Panki Dham
7. Pokhrayan
These stations will see upgrades in facilities and infrastructure to meet the growing needs of passengers and ensure a seamless travel experience.
Challenges and Progress
The redevelopment of stations is a complex process involving passenger and train safety. It requires clearances for fire safety, heritage preservation, tree cutting, and airport regulations. Challenges like shifting utilities, ensuring train operations without disruptions, and working near high-voltage power lines can delay progress.
Despite these challenges, the scheme promises a brighter future for railway stations in Kanpur and Uttar Pradesh. With modern amenities, better connectivity, and eco-friendly solutions, these stations aim to transform the travel experience.
This initiative adds to previous efforts like the Adarsh Station Scheme, under which 1,251 stations were developed with improved facades, waiting rooms, ramps, and other passenger-friendly facilities.
Kanpur's railway stations are now set to become models of progress, combining tradition and modernity for a better tomorrow.
