After a hiatus of nearly six years, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has resumed. This sacred pilgrimage was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and tensions following the Galwan Valley clash. Now, devotees can once again embark on this spiritual journey to Mount Kailash. NDTV provided a ground report capturing the first views of the majestic Kailash Parvat.

On June 21, the initial group of Indian pilgrims entered China's Tibet Autonomous Region through the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. This year, 750 pilgrims were chosen from over 5,500 applicants via a computerised lottery system. The Ministry of External Affairs organises this annual yatra between June and September using two routes: Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.
Pilgrims' Spiritual Experience
The pilgrimage lasts 23 to 25 days and includes a demanding 45-km trek. NDTV interviewed several pilgrims at various stages of their journey. Many were visibly moved, chanting "Har Har Mahadev" and "Om Namah Shivaya" while sprinkling holy Ganga water at Mansarovar Lake's banks. Although bathing is not allowed, stepping into the lake is believed to cleanse lifetimes of sins.
One pilgrim expressed to NDTV, "The entire cosmos is said to be centered around Kailash. This place is believed to be the centre of the universe. Now that we are standing here, words fail us. We are speechless." Another devotee shared with folded hands, "The greatest strength I've found is that of Lord Shiva's blessings."
Devotees' Reflections
A woman pilgrim mentioned, "The youngest in our group is 20 years old, and the oldest is 69. Every member of our batch has completed the parikrama successfully. It's nothing short of a divine blessing." Amongst the most poignant scenes was an elderly woman who had taken a maun vrat or vow of silence.
Although she did not speak, her gestures conveyed deep devotion as she raised her hands skyward and then over her head for blessings. With a gentle smile and folded hands, she stood still as sacred water droplets glistened on her skin.
This revered journey offers devotees an opportunity for spiritual reflection and connection with divinity amidst breathtaking landscapes. The resumption of this pilgrimage marks a significant moment for those seeking solace and blessings from Lord Shiva at Mount Kailash.
