Chennai Metro's Phase II project will improve connectivity between some of the city's major residential, commercial, and IT hubs, including three new Metro corridors that will expand the city's public transport network and provide better connections to important areas.
Chennai Metro Phase II Corridors
The 45.8-km Corridor-3 will connect Madhavaram with Siruseri SIPCOT through the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). The corridor is expected to improve connectivity to several important residential, commercial, and IT areas along the rapidly developing OMR stretch.
The 26.1-km Corridor-4 will run between Lighthouse and Poonamallee Bypass. It will provide an important east-west Metro connection across Chennai, linking several major parts of the city.
The third corridor, Corridor-5, will cover 47 km and connect Madhavaram with Sholinganallur. This route will strengthen connectivity between Chennai's growing residential areas and important IT hubs.
Chennai Metro's Extended Project Costing
The three corridors form a major part of Chennai Metro's Phase II expansion and have an estimated cost of Rs 63,246 crore. Around 42 km of the total Metro network under the project will run underground. The Centre has released Rs 14,545.91 crore for the project since it was sanctioned in October 2024. The release of funds has been based on Chennai Metro Rail Limited's requirements and the pace of construction.
The expanded Metro network is also planned to connect important railway stations, bus terminals, and the airport, along with other Metro corridors. Dedicated feeder services are planned to improve last-mile connectivity and make it easier for passengers to reach Metro stations from nearby residential and commercial areas.
