The Jewar International Airport, poised to commence operations in mid-April 2025, is in the advanced stages of planning, with operations slated to include international connections to Singapore, Dubai, and Zurich. This development comes as officials from Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) engage in discussions to establish these key routes. With a substantial portion of construction work already completed, the airport is gearing up to serve over 30 destinations right from its inception, encompassing 25 domestic, three international, and two cargo flights.
The construction of the Jewar International Airport has seen significant progress, with over 80 percent of the terminal work finalized as of January 2025. Shailendra Bhatia, the Nodal Officer at NIAL, confirmed that the construction is on schedule, with the remaining tasks progressing swiftly towards the April deadline. The airport, which represents a critical infrastructure development for the region, has utilized 90 percent of the allocated budget for its first phase. The funds cover both land acquisition, supported by the Uttar Pradesh government, and project development managed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International (Zurich AG).
Expanding Global Connectivity and Facilities
NIAL's strategy includes broadening its international reach, with talks underway to introduce flights to Munich and Brussels later in the year. This expansion plan hinges on securing bilateral licensing agreements between countries and the demand for these routes. The airport's design accommodates a wide array of operations, including a terminal capable of handling 12 million passengers annually, supporting 1 lakh flights, and managing 2.5 lakh tonnes of cargo. This ambitious project is set to unfold in four phases, aiming to establish multiple hubs that include a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hub and a multi-modal cargo hub.
The first phase of the airport spans 1,334 hectares in Jewar and features a terminal designed to accommodate significant passenger, flight, and cargo volumes. The terminal itself spans 1 lakh square metres and includes 28 aircraft stands. The development plan also includes the establishment of an MRO hub on 40 acres and a multi-modal cargo hub on 80 acres, underscoring the project's comprehensive approach to aviation infrastructure.
Advancing Towards Operational Readiness
The airport's readiness for operations received a significant boost last month when its concessionaire applied for an aerodrome licence, following a successful validation test flight. An Airbus 320 executed a landing and takeoff, demonstrating the airport's operational capabilities. This test involved officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI), marking a pivotal step towards the airport's launch. The initial plan was to start operations in September 2024, but a high-level meeting involving NIAL, YIAPL, DGCA, AAI, and other stakeholders led to a revised timeline.
The airport's strategic location and its connections to key domestic and international destinations position it as a significant player in India's aviation sector. Domestic routes will link Noida with major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Dehradun, and Hubli, enhancing regional connectivity.
