IRCTC Ends Delay Compensation Policy for This Trains: ₹26 Lakh Paid Over 5 Years

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has made a major decision to end its compensation policy for delays in private train services. Introduced in 2019 as a passenger-friendly initiative, the scheme offered refunds to passengers for delays exceeding one hour on Tejas Express trains. While it was initially planned to continue until 2024, IRCTC officially discontinued the policy on February 15, 2024, signaling a change in its operational strategies.

IRCTC Ends Delay Compensation Policy

The compensation scheme aimed to attract more passengers to Tejas trains running between New Delhi and Lucknow and Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Under the policy, passengers received ₹100 for delays between 60 and 120 minutes and ₹250 for delays between 120 and 240 minutes. Additionally, in case of train cancellations, full fare refunds were provided, along with food and water during delays.

During its tenure, the policy demonstrated IRCTC's commitment to improving passenger satisfaction. Over ₹26 lakh was paid out as compensation, with a record ₹15.65 lakh distributed in the fiscal year 2023-24 alone. These figures highlight the scheme's significance in enhancing the travel experience and building passenger trust.

Decline in Compensation Payouts

The policy's impact varied over the years, reflecting changing operational circumstances. Compensation payouts included ₹1.78 lakh in 2019-20, none in 2020-21 due to the pandemic, ₹96,000 in 2021-22, ₹7.74 lakh in 2022-23, and a significant rise to ₹15.65 lakh in 2023-24. Despite its growing success, IRCTC decided to terminate the scheme, citing confidentiality regarding the reasons.

IRCTC's Expanding Services

IRCTC, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Railways, has broadened its focus to include catering, tourism, online ticketing, and managing private trains. The compensation scheme was part of its strategy to enhance passenger experience and make train travel more appealing. Although the program has ended, IRCTC remains dedicated to improving its services and ensuring passenger comfort.

The discontinuation of this unique compensation policy marks the end of an era for IRCTC's passenger-centric approach to delays. As the corporation evolves, it aims to adopt new strategies to maintain its focus on delivering high-quality services.
