Indore Officials To File FIRs Against Almsgiving From January 2025

Indore's district officials will file FIRs against almsgiving starting January 1, 2025, as part of efforts to eliminate begging. An awareness campaign is currently ongoing, with a focus on rehabilitation and addressing organised begging networks.

In an effort to eliminate begging in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, district officials announced that starting January 1, 2025, they will file FIRs against those who give alms. The district collector, Ashish Singh, stated that the administration has already banned begging in the city.

"Our awareness campaign against begging will go on in the city till the end of this month (December). If any person is found giving alms from January 1, a First Information Report (FIR) will also be registered against him/her," he said.

Focus on Awareness and Rehabilitation

The administration's awareness campaign will continue throughout December. Singh urged residents not to contribute to what he termed as "sin" by giving money to beggars. The authorities have uncovered various gangs forcing individuals to beg and have rehabilitated many involved.

"I appeal to all residents of Indore not to become partners in the sin by giving alms to people," the official said.

National Initiative for Beggar-Free Cities

The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched a pilot project aiming to make ten Indian cities free of beggars, with Indore included in this initiative. This project reflects a broader national effort to address the issue of begging across urban areas.

The administration's actions are part of a larger strategy to tackle organised begging networks and provide support for those affected. By focusing on both prevention and rehabilitation, authorities hope to create lasting change in Indore.

As these measures take effect, it remains crucial for citizens to cooperate with local efforts. The success of such initiatives depends significantly on public participation and understanding of the underlying issues related to begging.
