Indian Railways is speeding up production of the new Vande Bharat sleeper train, a modern long-distance train with sleeping berths, and Titagarh Rail Systems is playing a significant role in building it. The company, based in Uttarpara, West Bengal, is working with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to manufacture these

trains. Their goal is to finish the car bodies for the first train rake with 16 coaches by March 31, 2026. This is part of India's effort to make more of these advanced trains domestically rather than importing them.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Trainsets
The plan is to eventually produce 80 Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, each with 16 coaches, at Titagarh's factories. The company has already started assembling parts and is increasing production steadily so that the new trains can be rolled out and tested soon. Officials are hopeful that the first complete train will be ready later in the year, around the third quarter of the financial year.
Contract Awarded to Manufacturers
The Ministry of Railways has awarded contracts to three manufacturers: BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited), a Russo-Indian joint venture called Kinet Railway Solutions, and the Titagarh-BHEL consortium. The first actual Vande Bharat sleeper service, running between Howrah and Kamakhya in Assam, has already started operations after its development by BEML using technology from the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.
This production drive is part of a larger move by Indian Railways to modernise its fleet with faster, more comfortable trains for long journeys. The sleeper version combines the speed and comfort of Vande Bharat technology with the benefits of overnight travel, helping passengers on longer routes travel comfortably and quickly.
