India's first urban ropeway venture, the Varanasi Ropeway Project, is making great progress. This exciting project aims to connect key areas of Varanasi, starting with a segment from the Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station to RathYatra, which is expected to be completed by August 2024. The Varanasi Ropeway Project falls under the National Ropeways Development Programme, known as 'Parvatmala Pariyojana,' and is set to bring major improvements to the city's transportation system.

Enhancing Connectivity
The first phase of the Varanasi Ropeway Project will significantly improve connectivity between Varanasi Cantonment Station and important destinations in the city's southern and western areas. This phase, costing an estimated Rs 645 crore, is expected to be finished by 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this ambitious project in March 2023. The ropeway will cover a stretch of 3.75 km, with five stations from Varanasi Cantonment station to Godowlia. This project aims to ease movement for tourists, pilgrims, and residents alike.
Gondola Showcased
Pulkit Garg, vice-chairman of the Varanasi Development Authority, showcased a gondola at Dashaswamedh Plaza. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Modi virtually experienced boarding one of these gondolas. The trial runs of the gondolas on the cable are set to begin by the end of July, with passenger service expected to start between November and December. This initial service will run between Varanasi Junction (Cantt Railway Station) and RathYatra via Kashi Vidyapeeth. Work on extending the full route to Godowlia will continue after the first phase becomes operational.
Stunning Views and Reduced Travel Time
The Varanasi Ropeway offers stunning aerial views of the city and drastically reduces travel time between Varanasi Junction and Godowlia to just 16 minutes. With a capacity of 6,000 passengers per hour, the service will feature around 150 gondolas. Each gondola will accommodate 10 passengers and will operate on the up and down cables. Passengers can expect a gondola to arrive every 2-3 minutes at any of the four stations.
A First for India
India will be the third country in the world, after Mexico City and Bolivia, to have a ropeway for public transportation. The ropeway service will connect Cantt Railway Station (Varanasi Junction) to Church Square (Godowlia), helping to ease traffic congestion in the city.
Key Stations and Routes
The main terminus of the ropeway will be at the Cantt Railway Station, with other stations at Sajan, RathYatra, and Church Square (Godowlia). A turning line will be created between Cantt Railway Station and Sajan Crossing. The ropeway will cover an aerial distance of 4.2 km in just 15 minutes.
Cost and Funding
The total cost of the pilot project is estimated to be Rs 424 crore. This cost will be shared between the Central and State Governments in an 80:20 ratio. Around 220 cable cars will run on the ropeway service, each with 10 seats. These cable cars will move at intervals of 90-120 seconds.
Night Operations and Public-Private Partnership
The ropeway service will operate at night and will be executed through a public-private partnership model. This ensures that the project will be managed efficiently and sustainably.
The Varanasi Ropeway Project is a groundbreaking venture that will transform urban transportation in India. By providing fast, efficient, and scenic travel, the ropeway will benefit tourists, pilgrims, and residents. With its innovative design and strategic funding, this project is set to become a model for future urban transportation projects in India and around the world. As the project progresses towards completion, it promises to enhance the travel experience and reduce congestion in the historic city of Varanasi.
