India is set to witness a historic sports event with the launch of its first-ever city-based rowing league, the ASMITA Rowing League. This exciting competition will take place at Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad, starting from February 26. The league is a major step in promoting rowing in India, especially for young female athletes. It is supported by the Indian Government under the Khelo India mission, which encourages the growth of sports in the country.

A New Platform for Young Rowers
The ASMITA Rowing League is designed to give young female rowers a chance to showcase their skills. The competition will feature eight teams and a total of 250 girls competing in different age groups. Participants will be from the U-19 and U-23 categories, and they will take part in five different events. This league is expected to play an important role in the development of rowing among women in India.
Teams and Events
The league is being organized in partnership with the Rowing Federation of India. Teams from different cities will compete in the event, including:
- Bhopal Waves Queen
- Chennai Ranis
- Cochin Queens
- Cuttack Rowing
- Deccan Queen Pune
- Hyderabad Queen
- Kolkata R-Oars
- Ludhiana Team Rowing
The competition will include five rowing events:
- Single Sculls (W1x)
- Double Sculls (W2x)
- Quadruple Sculls (W4x)
- Coxless Pairs (W2)
- Coxless Fours (W4)
To encourage competition and excellence, the top six finishers in each event will receive cash rewards.
Support from Experts
Ismail Baig, the National chief coach who has led the Indian rowing team in five Olympic Games and seven Asian Games, praised the government for supporting women's sports. He expressed excitement about hosting a city-based rowing league for the first time. He also mentioned that some rules had been relaxed to allow more participants to join and gain experience. "We are staging such a city-based league for the first time in this sport. Since it is being organised for the first time, we have relaxed certain rules to encourage more and more kids to come and compete," he said in a statement shared by the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
The ASMITA Rowing League is more than just a competition. It is a sign of India's growing commitment to promoting sports, especially those that are less followed. By providing a professional platform for young female rowers, the league will help develop the sport in the country.
