The Indian Railways manufacturing unit being built at Kazipet in Telangana is expected to be completed soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in July 2023. On Thursday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the plans for starting operations at the Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit. According to the Ministry of Railways, the factory will first manufacture 200 intercity trains over the next five years.

Building of Trains with Modern Features

These trains are being planned mainly for short-distance travel between nearby towns and cities. They are expected to run for distances of around 300 km and will have many stops during each journey. The Railways said these trains will help students travelling for education, office workers, and people travelling for healthcare and other daily needs.

The new intercity trains will work like shuttle services and are expected to become an affordable travel option for passengers. Railway officials believe that many people who currently travel by road may shift to trains once these services begin.

The trains will include several modern facilities for passenger comfort and safety. They will have automatic doors, better ventilation systems, and safer coach designs. Each train will have 20 coaches, and every coach will contain two toilets, one at each end.
The Railways also said the trains will be fitted with modern jerk-free couplers and advanced bogies to provide a smoother and more comfortable journey. These trains are being designed to run at speeds of up to 130 kmph.

Another important feature is regenerative braking technology. This system will generate electricity when brakes are applied and send the power back to the grid, helping save energy. Officials said this makes the trains more environmentally friendly and reduces carbon emissions compared to road transport.
