Ahead of the upcoming elections, Indian Railways has approved long-pending requests to add more stoppages for trains across the state. In total, 29 express trains and six passenger trains will now halt at additional stations. This decision is expected to improve travel convenience for passengers and reduce crowding at major railway terminals.

Introduction of Stoppages
One of the key changes is the introduction of stoppages at Wimco Nagar for the Chennai-Vijayawada Pinakini Express, Vijayawada Jan Shatabdi Express, and the Bitragunta Passenger train. Since Wimco Nagar is connected to the Metro rail network, it is expected to develop into an important transport hub and help reduce congestion at Chennai Central.
Other important changes include new stoppages at Tiruvallur station for the Chennai-Coimbatore Kovai Express and the Chennai-Bengaluru Double Decker Express. The Chennai-Jolarpettai Express will now stop at Ambattur, while the Chennai Egmore-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Express will halt at Arakkonam. According to railway officials, the Railway Board has already issued the necessary orders, and the exact dates for starting these new stoppages will be announced soon.
List of Express Trains to Stop at Several Stations
The list of 29 express trains includes mail, superfast, Jan Shatabdi, Antyodaya, and several long-distance inter-state services. These include major routes such as Chennai-Mumbai, Chennai-Vijayawada, Bengaluru-Kanniyakumari, Ahmedabad, Kacheguda, and Parasuram Express services.
How is the Change Beneficial?
The main aim of this move is to reduce pressure on busy terminals like Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore by allowing passengers to board and get off at suburban stations. This will also improve last-mile connectivity, as travellers will no longer need to travel far to reach major stations. In the long run, it will support the development of secondary transport hubs at places like Wimco Nagar and Ambattur.
Other Stoppages
Several other trains have also received new stoppages. The Tambaram-Sengottai Express will now halt at Chengalpattu and Peravurani, the Kamban Express at Chidambaram, the Mannai Express at Tirupadrippuliyur, the Uzhavan Express at Vaithisvarankoil, and the Cholan Express at Tiruverumbur. The Tambaram-Rameswaram Express will stop at Muthupet and Peravurani. The Mumbai CSMT-Nagercoil Express will halt at Jolarpettai, while the Purulia-Tirunelveli Express will stop at Arni Road.
Passenger trains have also been included in the changes. The Villupuram-Tirupati Passenger will now stop at Madhimangalam, the Chennai Egmore-Puducherry Express at Olakur, and the Villupuram-Dindigul Express at Pichcandar Kovil, along with several other services receiving additional halts.
