The Indian government is planning to introduce Annual and Lifetime Toll Passes to reduce congestion at toll plazas and make travel on national highways and expressways more affordable. This new system will allow frequent travelers to pay a one-time fee for long-term access, making journeys smoother and faster.

New Toll Pass Options for Travelers
Under this plan, motorists will have two choices:
- Annual Toll Pass: Costs Rs 3,000 and provides unlimited access to all national highways and expressways for one year.
- Lifetime Toll Pass: Costs Rs 30,000 and offers the same unlimited access for 15 years.
These passes will be linked to the FASTag system, ensuring a seamless transition for users and reducing long queues at toll booths, especially during peak hours.
How These Passes Will Benefit Travelers
Currently, private vehicles account for 26% of India's total toll collection. Many regular travelers use monthly toll passes, which cost Rs 340 per plaza, adding up to Rs 4,080 per year. However, these are valid only for a single toll plaza. The new Annual and Lifetime Toll Passes will remove this restriction, allowing unlimited access to all toll roads in India at a much lower cost for frequent commuters.
Final Approval and Future Plans
The proposal is in its final approval stage by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. Along with these passes, the government is also exploring ways to reduce toll rates per kilometer, further easing the financial burden on travelers.
The Annual and Lifetime Toll Passes could be a game-changer for highway travel in India. By integrating these passes into the existing FASTag system, the process will be smooth and convenient. If approved, this initiative will reduce traffic congestion, lower travel costs, and improve the overall highway experience for millions of drivers across the country.
