India is about to make history with the construction of the world's highest motorable tunnel, connecting Ladakh and Manali. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), known for its significant infrastructure projects in border regions, has started work on this exciting project at the Shinku La pass near Manali in Himachal Pradesh. World Highest Motorable Tunnel in India

The construction was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the eve of the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Divas, he remotely triggered the first blast from the Kargil War memorial in Dras, marking the beginning of this crucial project.

Here are the key details about the new tunnel:

- Location: The tunnel will be built at Shinku La pass, which is close to Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

- Length: It will stretch for 4.1 kilometers.

- Altitude: The tunnel will be constructed at an impressive height of 15,800 feet above sea level.

- Route: It will create a direct link between Manali and Leh, the capital of the Ladakh Union Territory. The route will pass through Nimmu, Padum, and Darcha in Himachal Pradesh.

- Significance: Once completed, this tunnel will surpass the Mila tunnel in China, which is currently the highest motorable tunnel in the world at 15,590 feet. The Shinku La tunnel will be at 15,800 feet. The Shinku La pass itself is at 16,615 feet.

World Highest Motorable Tunnel in India

The BRO is in charge of building and maintaining this tunnel. It will offer a new route to Ladakh, in addition to the existing Srinagar-Leh highway and the Manali-Leh highway. The highway between Manali and Leh is about 355 kilometers long and crosses several high mountain passes. With the new Shinku La tunnel, the distance between Manali and Leh will be reduced to just 295 kilometers, and it will include Shinku La as the only high mountain pass.
