The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has concerns about a cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea, expected to evolve into a low-pressure area soon. This development, forecasted to occur around October 21, could escalate into a depression by October 23, moving northwestwards. Coastal regions of north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh on high alert for potential impacts next week. The IMD's vigilance underscores the urgency in monitoring this system, especially given the unpredictability of cyclonic activities during October, a month historically prone to such weather phenomena.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the progression of this weather system. He noted, "The IMD has made no prediction on whether the system will develop into a cyclonic storm. October is known as the month of cyclones and some weather models are indicating probability of cyclogenesis. We provide a forecast on the path and intensification of a system after assessing over 10 weather models but right now there is no consensus among them as a low-pressure area is yet to be formed." This statement highlights the complexities in forecasting weather events, especially in regions susceptible to cyclones.
Precautionary Measures and Weather Alerts
In anticipation of adverse weather conditions, Mohapatra has advised fishermen to cease their activities and seek safety by October 21. The advisory comes as the low-pressure area expected to form soon could bring squally weather conditions, with wind speeds ranging from 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph over the eastcentral and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal on October 21-22. The impending system poses significant risks, warranting caution and preparedness among coastal communities and maritime personnel.
The weather forecast also predicts heavy rainfall for the coastal region of Odisha between October 23-25, signalling a period of heightened weather activity. Additionally, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely in parts of south and north coastal Odisha, while north interior Odisha may experience dry conditions. These forecasts are crucial for local authorities and residents to prepare and implement necessary measures to mitigate the impact of the expected weather disturbances.
Widespread Weather Warnings
The IMD has not only issued warnings for the immediate vicinity of the cyclonic circulation but has also put several states under alert. An orange alert has been declared for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, predicting heavy rainfall on October 20. Similarly, a yellow alert has been issued for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, and Konkan, advising residents of potential rainfall. Furthermore, from October 21 to October 25, an orange alert will remain in effect for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with additional warnings for heavy rainfall in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra. These alerts are indicative of the widespread nature of the weather system's impact, affecting a broad swathe of the Indian subcontinent.
