The number of electric vehicles (EVs) in India is growing rapidly. To support this shift towards eco-friendly transportation, the demand for EV charging stations has become crucial. Public charging stations are now being installed in cities and along major highways to make charging more accessible for EV users. But how many charging stations are currently available, and what are the plans for expanding this network? Let's explore the details shared during the recent Winter Session of the Rajya Sabha.
EV Charging Stations in India
Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, shared some key insights during the session. He revealed that as of November 28, 2024, there are 25,202 charging stations across the country. Looking ahead, the government aims to significantly boost this number to 72,000 charging stations in the near future.
To help EV owners locate these stations easily, the government launched the EV Yatra portal in 2022. This platform allows users to find the nearest charging station or map out stations along their route, ensuring a seamless travel experience for EV drivers.
How to Locate EV Charging Stations
The EV Yatra portal provides two simple methods for finding charging stations:
A. Location-Wise Search
1. Visit the EV Yatra portal at evyatra.beeindia.gov.in.
2. Click on Public Charging Stations (the second tab in the menu).
3. Enter your location.
4. The portal will display the exact location of the nearest charging stations.
B. Finding Stations on Your Route
1. Open the EV Yatra portal.
2. Click on Public Charging Stations.
3. Select the Route option.
4. Enter your start and end points, then click Get Route.
5. The portal will show the locations of charging stations along your selected route.
Guidelines for Setting Up EV Charging Stations
To make the establishment of charging stations simpler and more affordable, the government has introduced clear guidelines:
- Electricity Connection: EV station owners can opt for a Low Tension (LT) connection for loads up to 150 kW.
- Incentives for Public Lands: Charging stations can be set up on government or public lands at low costs or through revenue-sharing models.
- Simplified Tariffs: A single-part tariff, based on the "Average Cost of Supply," will apply until March 31, 2028.
- Solar Charging Incentives: Charging during solar hours (9 am to 4 pm) is encouraged with additional incentives.
- Residential Charging Options: Homeowners can use their existing connections or get a separate metered connection with a dedicated tariff for EV charging.
- Interoperability Standards: Open protocols like OCPP, OCPI, and UEI are recommended for seamless connectivity across the network.
