Hyderabad Moves to Take Phase I Control of 69.2-km Metro by Month’s End as Plans Emerge for Electric Pods

The State government is working to take control of Phase I of the 69.2-km Hyderabad Metro Rail project from L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad by the end of this month. At the same time, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited has started planning a new system to improve last-mile connectivity and introduce an

elevated, battery-operated pod transport system. Each small pod will carry around four to six passengers, and the system can handle up to 10,000 passengers per hour. These pods will help people travel easily between Metro stations and nearby residential areas.

First Concept Proposal in Mumbai

This concept was first proposed in Mumbai and is also being planned in Bandra-Kurla Complex. HMRL now wants to test it in Hyderabad after a detailed study, which may take around six months.

Technical & Financial Feasibility

To move ahead, HMRL has already issued a tender to hire a consultant. The consultant will study the technical and financial feasibility, design the system, and help with the bidding process for this automated Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) project.

Pilot Project

The pilot project is planned for the Raidurg-Kukatpally route, covering areas including Raidurg, Hi-Tec City, Financial District, and Secretariat.

How will the Pod System Work?

Officials said the pod system will work along with Metro services. A connecting bridge will link Metro stations to the pod network. The pods will run on an elevated track built along the middle of the road, about five metres above ground. The structure will take very little space, so land acquisition may not be needed in most places. The elevated track will be about four to five metres wide and will carry pods on demand. Similar systems are already used in places like London Heathrow Airport, the Netherlands, and Abu Dhabi.

The project is likely to be developed under a public-private partnership model. HMRL also plans to introduce a common fare card to connect Metro and last-mile services, making travel more convenient for passengers.
