Historic Railway Link: Assam to Connect Bhutan by Train for the First Time

Bhutan is set to have its first-ever railway connection, thanks to the efforts of Indian Railways. This project will link Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, covering a distance of 69.04 km. The detailed project report (DPR) for this railway line has been completed, marking an important step in strengthening ties between the two neighboring countries.

Boost for Trade, Tourism, and Connectivity

The railway line is expected to improve trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between India and Bhutan. By providing a direct rail link, the project will help in easier transportation of goods and people, benefiting both countries. The improved connectivity is also expected to support local businesses and boost regional economies.

A spokesperson from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) stated, "The proposed railway line will significantly strengthen India-Bhutan relations by enhancing trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between the two nations. It will also improve connectivity, providing Bhutan with its first-ever railway link, facilitating seamless transportation."

Key Features of the Railway Project

The railway project, estimated to cost Rs 3,500 crore, will include six new railway stations:
- Balajan
- Garubhasa
- Runikhata
- Shantipur
- Dadgiri
- Gelephu

Additionally, the project will feature:
- Two significant bridges
- 29 major bridges
- 65 minor bridges
- One road over-bridge
- 39 road under-bridges
- Two viaducts, each 11 meters long

These structures will ensure the smooth operation of trains while maintaining safety and efficiency.

Part of India's Regional Development Policy

This railway link aligns with India's 'Act East Policy' and 'Neighbourhood First Policy,' which aim to strengthen relationships with neighboring countries and promote regional development. The project is also expected to transform the Bodoland Territorial Region into an important hub for trade and transit.

With the final location survey completed, the DPR has been submitted for approval. Once approved, construction work is expected to begin soon. The railway link will provide new opportunities for local communities and improve the overall travel experience for passengers.

The upcoming railway connection between Assam and Bhutan is a historic step for both nations.
