Heavy Snowfall Closes Jammu-Srinagar Highway, Disrupts Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed heavy snowfall on February 20, 2025, causing the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NHW) between Banihal and Ramsoo. The roads became dangerously slippery, leading authorities to advise travelers to avoid the route for their safety. The severe weather also led to the suspension of helicopter and ropeway services at the Vaishno Devi shrine, affecting pilgrims visiting the sacred site.

Heavy Snowfall Shuts Jammu-Srinagar High

Highway Closure and Travel Disruptions

The heavy snowfall made travel unsafe, forcing the shutdown of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a key route connecting Jammu and Kashmir. The affected stretch between Banihal and Ramsoo became too risky for vehicles due to slippery roads and reduced visibility. Officials urged travelers to postpone their journeys until conditions improve.

The harsh weather did not only impact roadways. The helicopter and ropeway services at Vaishno Devi shrine were suspended due to bad weather, affecting pilgrims who rely on these services for a smooth journey to the temple. The stoppage of transport facilities has caused difficulties for thousands of devotees.

Rain Ends Dry Spell in Jammu and Kashmir

Despite the travel issues, the rainfall and snowfall have brought relief to the region. Before this weather change, Jammu had suffered from an 83% rainfall shortage, while Kashmir faced an 81% deficit since the start of 2025. The fresh precipitation is good news for farmers, as it will help improve soil moisture levels, benefiting crops and agriculture.

Snowfall in Tourist Spots and Freezing Temperatures

The snowfall did not just cover highways but also transformed several tourist spots into winter wonderlands. Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, and Doodhpathri in Budgam district received fresh snowfall, attracting nature lovers but also lowering temperatures.

Sonamarg recorded -5°C, with snow blanketing the entire landscape. Other affected areas include Peer Ki Gali, Banihal hills, Sinthan Top, and parts of Mughal Road in Poonch district.

Impact on Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage

The suspension of helicopter services from Katra to Vaishno Devi added to the travel disruptions. Pilgrims faced challenges in reaching the holy shrine as both helicopter and ropeway services remained closed. Authorities will resume services once weather conditions improve.

The heavy snowfall and rain have had mixed effects in Jammu and Kashmir. While travel disruptions and pilgrimage difficulties have caused inconvenience, the rainfall has been beneficial for farmers and the environment. Travelers are advised to check for weather updates before planning journeys in the coming days.
