Chennai and several districts in Tamil Nadu are bracing for heavy rainfall this week, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). With a weather disturbance active over the Bay of Bengal, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, signaling significant rainfall across the region. From November 11 to 15, moderate to severe thunderstorms are expected, with temperatures ranging between 25°C and 33°C.

The IMD has warned that Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, and Villuppuram districts will face heavy downpours. Additionally, the nearby union territories of Puducherry and Karaikal are also likely to experience similar weather conditions. Rainfall could range between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in the coming days, creating a potentially challenging situation for residents and travelers in these areas.
Today's forecast suggests partly cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Chennai. The temperature in the city is expected to peak around 32-33°C, with the lowest temperature near 25°C. Alongside the rain, strong winds of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, may occur over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal.
In light of the IMD's alert, schools across Chennai have been closed today to ensure student safety. District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade confirmed this decision as a precautionary step following the IMD's predictions. Additionally, recent visuals from the news agency PTI have shown considerable rainfall in parts of Tiruvallur, further emphasizing the need for public caution.
The IMD also noted that areas in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Yanam could experience similar weather, with rain exceeding 7 cm in some isolated locations. This weather is attributed to the active system over the Bay of Bengal, expected to sustain the heavy rainfall patterns over Tamil Nadu and its neighboring areas.
This series of storms and rain showers adds a cool respite to the region's temperature. However, residents are advised to stay alert as rain could impact daily life and infrastructure. With the IMD's warning extended through November 12, people should be prepared for further disruptions.
Meanwhile, northern states like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Patna continue to face air quality issues. These areas have experienced high pollution levels, with AQI in the 'very poor' range. Experts predict these conditions will persist due to colder temperatures and ongoing stubble burning.
In response to these weather events, the IMD urges residents in affected areas to take all necessary precautions. As the rain intensifies, staying informed is essential to managing the impacts of these challenging weather conditions.
