Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is still waiting for the Central government to announce the inauguration date for the operationally ready Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani Metro corridor. However, six stations on this route are still under construction and are expected to be completed only after a few more months, causing further delays to the project.
Chennai Metro Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani Corridor
The six stations are Saligramam, Avichi School, Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam and Alapakkam Junction. These stations were originally expected to be completed by June 2026. CMRL had earlier planned to open the Poonamallee Bypass-Porur section first, with Metro trains passing through these unfinished stations without stopping before reaching Vadapalani. Officials later hoped that the pending stations would be completed before the corridor was inaugurated, but the work is still not finished.
The 14.6-km Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani corridor has already received all the required safety approvals from the authorities. Even though the line is ready for operations, it cannot be opened until the Centre announces an official inauguration date.
Chennai Metro Stations to be Completed by the End of September
According to CMRL officials, the six unfinished stations are now expected to be ready by the end of September. After construction is completed, the stations will have to undergo inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) before they can be opened for passengers.
Officials stated that the stations are likely to become operational in October or November if everything goes as planned. They also explained that completing the remaining work may become more difficult once Metro services begin on the corridor. After trains start running, there will be restrictions on workers entering platform areas and the double-decker stations on Corridor 5 during operating hours. This could slow down construction and finishing work at the remaining stations.
Passengers will have to wait longer for all stations on the Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani route to become fully operational, even though the main Metro corridor is technically ready for service and has already received the necessary safety clearance.
