Haryana's Heritage and Tourism Minister, Dr. Arvind Kumar Sharma, recently announced a major initiative to turn Kurukshetra and nearby areas into top tourist attractions. Known for its deep historical and mythological connection to the Mahabharata, Kurukshetra is now set to become part of the 'Mahabharata Circuit.' This announcement was made during the second Mahabharata Circuit Conference held in Karnal, where officials from Haryana Tourism and the Union Ministry of Tourism gathered to discuss development opportunities.

The Union Ministry of Tourism aims to develop historic sites in Kurukshetra, Karnal, and Panipat into major tourist hubs. Dr. Sharma suggested that Kurukshetra could be developed with facilities similar to those found in Vrindavan, a popular pilgrimage site. This initiative will focus on improving infrastructure, enhancing visitor facilities, and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Boosting Infrastructure for Global Appeal
R K Suman, Northern Regional Director of the Union Ministry of Tourism, emphasized their goal to make Kurukshetra a global pilgrimage center. The Mahabharata Circuit follows the success of other heritage circuits like the Ramayana and Krishna Circuits in northern India. With an investment of INR 200 crores, this project aims to attract pilgrims, history lovers, and international tourists by reviving interest in religious and historical tourism.
The three-day Mahabharata Circuit Conference in Kurukshetra brought together over 130 industry participants. This event highlighted Kurukshetra's historical importance and provided a platform to discuss strategies to boost tourism in the region. The conference showcased various ways Kurukshetra can become a key tourist destination in India.
Key Sites in the Mahabharata Circuit
The Mahabharata Circuit will include several important sites such as:
- Brahma Sarovar: A sacred water tank associated with Lord Brahma.
- Sri Krishna Museum: Displays artifacts related to the life of Lord Krishna.
- Bhishma Kund: The place where Bhishma lay on a bed of arrows.
- Jyotisar: The spot where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita.
Other attractions include Sheikh Chihli's Tomb, Gurudwara Navi Patshahi Sahib, Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple, and Bhadrakali Temple. The circuit will also extend into neighboring states like Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, covering significant sites in Hastinapur, Mathura, and Badrinath, among others.
Preserving Cultural Heritage for Future Generations
The Mahabharata Circuit project aims not only to attract tourists but also to preserve Haryana's cultural legacy. With Kurukshetra's historical sites, temples, and ancient tanks that trace back to the Mahabharata era, this initiative will provide visitors with a deeper understanding of India's rich history. The tourism boost is also expected to support local businesses and create job opportunities, benefiting the community as a whole.
Through these efforts, Haryana is setting the stage for Kurukshetra and surrounding areas to become a prominent destination on India's spiritual and historical tourism map, creating a lasting legacy for future generations to appreciate.
