In Gurugram, a dynamic initiative is underway to mitigate traffic congestion on the dense stretch from Hero Honda Chowk to Umang Bhardwaj Chowk. The project, spearheaded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and facilitated by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), envisages the construction of a six-lane surface road and a flyover. To accomplish this, the GMDA has already allocated funds for relocating utilities, marking a significant step towards the actualization of this endeavor.
The impetus for this project, set at ₹211 crore, emerged from the chronic traffic jams and bottlenecks that plague this 3.2 km strip, a vital artery connecting major highways and roads in Gurugram.
Recognizing the urgency, Ajay Kumar, the Gurugram Deputy Commissioner, confirmed that preparatory actions, such as drafting estimates for the relocation of sewage, water, and electricity lines, are in motion. This initiative, which was conceptualized in 2021 but faced delays due to land acquisition and encroachment issues, is now moving forward with a comprehensive review and a projected six-month timeline for shifting utilities.
The GMDA's commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing traffic flow in Gurugram is evident in the significant investment towards the land acquisition and utility shifting necessitated by the project. With ₹197 crore sanctioned for construction and an additional ₹25 crore for utilities' relocation, the authority is addressing the complex challenge of moving master pipelines and electricity lines that intersect the project stretch. To streamline the project's execution, NHAI officials have indicated that no new tenders are necessary, as the existing contractor for the Rewari-Pataudi highway could extend their work to include this segment.
