Gurugram Metro has Selected Krishna Chowk and Old Delhi Road for the Construction of Double-Decker Metro

The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has selected Krishna Chowk near Palam Vihar and Old Delhi Road near Sector 21 for the construction of integrated double-decker metro and road structures as part of the second phase of the Gurugram Metro project. The revised tender, worth ₹1,409 crore, now includes around ₹200 crore for the civil construction of these special structures.

The double-decker structures will be built on behalf of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and will be connected to the proposed Sector 9 to Cyber Hub metro corridor. GMRL has also requested an advance payment of ₹100 crore from the GMDA to begin planning, tendering and construction work.

According to a senior GMRL official, the cost of building these structures has already been included in the revised tender, which has been sent to the World Bank for approval. The official said the project is designed to make better use of limited space while also helping traffic move more smoothly at both locations.

The double-decker idea for parts of the second phase of the Gurugram Metro had been announced earlier. The latest proposal clearly identifies Krishna Chowk and Old Delhi Road as the locations where these structures will be built and explains how the project will be funded and carried out.

Under the proposed design, the upper level will carry the metro line, while the other level will be used as an elevated road. Both the metro track and the road will be supported by the same pillars, helping save land and reducing construction costs.
In a letter, GMRL said that the ₹100 crore being requested from the GMDA is only an advance. The final amount to be paid will depend on the actual cost of construction.

For the Old Delhi Road project, GMRL said it will construct only the flyover section that is connected with the metro viaduct. The remaining part of the flyover will be built by the GMDA at the same time so that the entire structure can be opened together.

GMRL has also proposed another integrated double-decker metro and road structure between Ghata and Vatika Chowk on the planned Sector 56 to Pachgaon metro corridor. This proposal has been submitted to the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC) for approval.
