The Gurugram Metro expansion, a significant upgrade to the city's transport infrastructure, is set to begin construction on May 1, 2025. This initiative aims to bridge critical areas within Millennium City Centre, Old Gurugram, and Cyber City through a 28.5-kilometre network featuring 27 elevated stations. The endeavour, pegged at a cost of ₹5,452.72 crore, will receive a substantial portion of its funding, amounting to ₹4,556.53 crore, from the Haryana government, with the Centre contributing an additional ₹896.19 crore.

In an effort to enhance traffic flow across Gurugram, the project also includes the construction of five underpasses and flyovers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted the expansion process by laying the foundation stone at a ceremony in Rewari in February 2024. This expansion is not just about connecting various points in the city but also about facilitating a smoother commute for its residents and visitors.

The Gurugram Metro's expansion is poised to significantly reduce travel times, alleviate congestion, and contribute to the city's position as a thriving economic centre. With an anticipated daily ridership of 540,000 passengers, expected to surge to 726,000 by 2031, the project underscores the growing demand for public transport solutions in one of India's fastest-growing metropolises. The initial phase will see the operation of three-coach trains, with plans to upgrade to six-coach configurations to accommodate the rising number of commuters.

Moreover, the introduction of a Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system across the 28.50 km-long new Metro network ensures enhanced safety and efficiency in operations. Highlighting the project's commitment to quality and comfort, eight stations will be designed as model stations, embodying the latest in urban transportation infrastructure. With trains set to travel at a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour, the network aims to offer a quick and reliable mode of transport to its users.

Projected to reach full operational capability by 2029, the expansion will span approximately four years. This timeline reflects the project's ambitious goals to modernize Gurugram's transportation landscape, making daily commutes faster and contributing to the city's ongoing growth as a significant economic hub. The Gurugram Metro expansion represents a forward-looking approach to urban planning, promising to enhance the quality of life for its citizens by offering a sustainable, efficient, and modern transportation solution.
