Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla Becomes First Indian Astronaut To The ISS In 40 Years

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla from the Indian Air Force has created history by flying aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft for the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The spacecraft lifted off on June 25 at 12:01 pm after facing a few delays. This is a proud moment for India, as Shukla becomes the first Indian to travel to the ISS in nearly 40 years, following the legendary Rakesh Sharma.

Shukla, who is also an astronaut with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), is part of an international crew. He is joined by mission commander and former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, along with mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. The Axiom-4 mission is a milestone for not just India, but also Poland and Hungary, as all three nations return to space with this mission.

A Journey to Inspire

Before his space journey, Shukla shared his hopes of inspiring young minds across India. He wants children to look up to space travel just like he once looked up to Rakesh Sharma. In a video posted by the Ax-4 mission on YouTube, he said, “It has been an amazing journey.” He added that he feels lucky to be part of something so meaningful and larger than himself.

Shubhanshu Shukla was born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He was commissioned into the Indian Air Force in June 2006 and is one of the four astronauts chosen for ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission. A highly skilled pilot, he has over 2,000 hours of flying experience on fighter aircraft like the Su-30 MKI and MiG-29. His career as a test pilot and combat leader reflects his dedication and bravery.

A Personal Dream Takes Flight

Shukla shared that he found out about the mission just a week before heading to Axiom. “I was extremely excited,” he said. “This was a chance for me to actually go to space.” His words show just how much this opportunity means to him, not just as a professional, but also as someone who’s dreamed of space.

The Axiom-4 mission is more than just a spaceflight—it’s a symbol of global teamwork and hope. As Shukla and his fellow astronauts head to the ISS, they carry with them the dreams of millions and a message to young people everywhere: the sky is not the limit.
